Frequently Asked Questions
Why are you running this appeal now?
The last year has been the most challenging in our 27 years as an arts organisation.
As a registered charity (no. 1080567) the Corn Exchange is asking for support from everyone we know, to help us to recover. As we’re finally able to return to our activities we need your support both now and in the future, to recover from the impact that the pandemic and our closure has had on our organisation.
Why are you asking for regular donations?
We are asking people to commit to a small monthly donation as this will allow us to plan our income more effectively over a longer period helping us to manage the financial impact of the pandemic.
Can I donate more than £5 a month?
Yes, you can – the amount is up to you, but we wanted the entry level to be affordable. When you complete an online direct debit instruction there are a number of options for the monthly donation amount, or you can select ‘Other’ to choose your own amount.
I don’t want to commit to a regular donation, but would still like to support you – what other ways of doing this are there?
We are grateful for all the support we receive. Other ways to help us include becoming a Member, making a one off donation and leaving a legacy in your will – full details can be found below.
Can you claim Gift Aid on regular donations?
Yes, as we are a registered charity, for every £1 you give, we can claim an extra 25p from HMRC, at no additional cost to you. All that you need to do is complete a one-off declaration, which you will be asked to do when you make your donation.
Gift Aid is a government scheme that allows us to reclaim the basic rate of tax you pay as a UK taxpayer. If you are a higher rate tax payer you can also claim additional tax relief.
Once completed, all you need to remember is to let us know of any changes to your tax status, including changes to your name and address.
What activities will my donation support?
Your donations will support all of our work, including our work in the community with young people, families and over-55s. This will include our work with older people through our Memory Cafés for people living with dementia, and our Ageing Creatively programmes in local care homes. Donations will help safeguard our programme of the best theatre, comedy, music, dance and films, our free outdoor shows for everyone in Newbury and beyond, and maintain our beautiful listed building ensuring it survives as a historical Newbury landmark.
Why is the Charities Aid Foundation processing my direct debit payments?
We are using Charities Aid Foundation to process direct debits on our behalf, as this allows us to do so without having to pay a monthly charge or setup fee. If we did this through our own bank it would be prohibitively expensive. Instead, Charities Aid Foundation charge us a small fee on donations which makes it possible for us to fundraise in this way.
All regular donations by direct debit are protected under the Direct Debit Guarantee.
Please note that monthly donations to the Corn Exchange will appear on your bank statement as ‘Charity Donation’.
Will you still ask me for a donation when I book tickets?
Yes, we will continue to ask everyone who books tickets for a donation, whether you book online, in person or on the telephone. We do this as a matter of course, without differentiating between customers, as these smaller donations provide us with a valuable source of income.
